Saint Ferdinand was the older first cousin of King Saint Louis IX and Saint Isabelle (Louis' little sister). Their mother, Blanche of Castile, was the younger sister of Doña Berengara (the oldest of 11 children), Ferdinand's mother. Ferdinand was born in 1198 and died in 1252. As a child of 14 he saw his grandfather, Alfonso VIII of Castile, victorious over the Moslems at the pivotal battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212.Inspired by the piety of his mother and the warlike heroism of his grandfather, he grew to become the quintessential Holy Knight.
This book has long been a favorite of the editors at Loreto. Published by The Crusade for Christian Civilization it is a wonderful biography and history of a great Saint (still incorrupt after 800 years), the Spanish Reconquista, and the 13th century in general.
