FATHER LEONARD FEENEY - 294 PAGES - Hardcover $24.95 - Softcover $14.95

Very few American priests have been as famous or have had as much influence on the Catholic church in the 20th century as Father Leonard Feeney, (S.J.) M.I.C.M. The doctrinal firestorm that arose when he accused Archbishop Cushing of Boston of protecting and defending certain priests and teachers at Boston College who were openly denying the thrice-defined dogma that “there is no salvation outside of the Catholic church” was front page news in 1949 and is still a burning issue today seventy years later. Three years after the Boston Heresy Case burst upon the post World War world, Father’s Bread of Life was first published, and it has remained continuously in print since then.

This is the only edition since the first to appear with anything but the original text. Three articles written by loyal and ardent disciples of Father Feeney are included in order to clarify certain questions that have arisen since the original publication in 1952.

As the modern world continues to find itself largely lost and bewildered 100 years after Our Lady appeared at Fatima and 78 years into the atomic age, the challenge of the everlasting message of the Catholic Faith is more relevant than ever. “Oh beauty ever ancient and ever new” was the cry of Saint Augustine 1600 years ago, and this is still the same joyful utterance made by Saint Benedict Center and the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to an unbelieving world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Leonard Feeney was born in 1897 in Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1917, he entered the Jesuit order. His theological studies were completed at the Jesuit Woodstock College in Maryland. After a few years teaching high school, he undertook more studies at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1927 he was sent to the Jesuits’ House of Studies in Weston, Mass., where he was ordained the following year. Before then, at Weston, his first collection of verse, In Towns and Little Towns, was published. He did three years of post graduate work at Oxford. Returning to America in 1931, he was assigned to teach at Boston College.

Here began a virtually uninterrupted profusion of literary works, poems and essays. He was named literary editor of the Jesuit Magazine America in 1936, given an office in Manhattan, employed as a preacher and retreat master, and commenced a rewarding apostolate among the blue-collar workers of the big city. He also found time to evangelize millions Sunday nights on the CBS radio’s Catholic Hour. In 1940, he returned to New England to teach theology at Weston’s House of Studies. Two years later he was introduced to Saint Benedict Center in Cambridge and was appointed by his superiors to be its spiritual director. Bread of Life was published in 1952.

After his dismissal from the Jesuit Order until his death, he was the founder and spiritual director of the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a religious order, comprised of men’s and women’s branches, dedicated to working for the Conversion of America. Father Feeney died and was buried on the Slaves of he Immaculate Heart of Mary property in Still River, Massachusetts, in 1978.

After his reconciliation and death, examination of Father Leonard Feeney's thought has fallen into two camps: 1) apologists (some quite radical, some reasonable) who advance and promote his memory (and cause? For.....?), and 2) those who search for evidence for their accusative catalogue of Jansenism.

Neither camp will be satisfied with this wonderful work, but both will likely submit it in evidence. For this is the fireside chat side of the late Fr. Feeney's thinking, all straight food for the contemplative layman. But his explications here departs little from what scholastic scholars also advanced, for this is more the memory of the Church retold in modern prose. Fr. Feeney's distinct style belies nothing of his supposed prickly reputation, and abrasive manner. In fact, if you took his name off the authorship and slapped on some other attribution such as "by a Catholic Priest" one would hardly notice these lessons beyond their remarkable serious devotional tone and classic traditional nature.
Outside of Baptism of Water there is no salvation (de fide)
In today's world some Catholics, and even some Traditional Catholics, continually bash Fr. Feeney as a "heretic." One of the things that the accusers bare their fangs at is father Feeney's incredible literary genius, fame, and his success.

Before I read "Bread Of Life" the only things I knew about Father Feeney were the prevalent false accusations that he "twisted Catholic doctrine," or, "Fr. Feeney's inconsistent teachings on salvation." Before I became familiar with Fr. Feeney's works I shrugged at the accusations made towards this Catholic priest and wondered what this priest taught to cause such bitter accusations. One day I came across a copy of "Bread of Life" and started reading. I was amazed at Father's beautiful chapters on the Holy Eucharist, and his love for the Blessed Mother. Father Feeney appeals to both your heart and and intellect; it would require a heart of stone to come away from "Bread of Life" unmoved, and Fr. Feeney backs his book with clear and undeniable logic.

The devotion, love, and clarity of thought found in this truly Catholic book has changed the way I remember Fr. Feeney. If you read "Bread of Life" you will understand why the Provincial of the Jesuits in the United States, Fr. John J. Mceleny S.J., said in 1947; "Fr. Feeney is the greatest theologian we have in the United States today, by far."
I'm not going to review the contents of the book since I just received it. I've read a few pages of the intro, and so far it's easy to read that draws me in to wanting to read more. I want to see what all the controversy about Father Feeney is about and what exactly is so "heretical" about what he said. The quality of the book itself is very good. Was not damaged despite being shipped to the other side of the world.
Read this book to discover how to do the following: "We dare not even start to hope until the Faith, the true Faith, and its revealed content, are secured in our minds. Only in terms of Faith do we dare to hope."~Fr. Leonard Feeney, MICM.
